Hernia Symptoms – Diagnosis, Treatment and Prevention

A Hernia is an abnormal disorder or condition wherein an organ bulges and passes through a weakened wall where such organ is normally placed.

Men are more prone to getting hernias than women are, for various reasons.. Some might be related to sports or athletics and others might be due to the descending of the testis way back in early childhood. As for women, they often occur during pregnancy. This is because there is an extra pressure exerted in the abdomen area. Hernias can occur whatever your age is, gender, and status of life. It can also be hereditary and the way you live you life can contribute. This article will give you information about diagnosis as well as treatment.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis is quite simple. It only requires a person to have a physical exam and that’s it. After which, the doctor will then locate where the hernia is located and determine whether there is a need to proceed with surgery or not. If the person does not feel any bit of pain and bothersome, the doctor will wait till there is some sort of development like increase in size of the lump and there is already pain.

Treatment

Two types of surgery:

1. Herniorrhaphy – This procedure requires having an incision done to the groin in order for the intestine to be pushed back to its proper place and the weakened spot can be repaired. Recovery might take at least 4-6 weeks. There is a slight possibility hernias will recur

2. Hernioplasty – This procedure would require several small incisions in order for the surgeon to insert a miniature camera to see what’s inside and properly place sutures over the area that has been damaged. This is often preferred by people who had surgeries before on the same area and recovery is quicker compared to herniorrhaphy. However, hernias do have the tendency to recur.

Prevention

If you have a hunch that you are suffering from hernia or do not want to have it to recur, then all you have to do is follow simple steps. First, if your job requires you to stand for longer hours, you must have frequent breaks. Second, avoid lifting heavy objects. Third, let your legs do some pushing instead of using your back. Fourth, always make your self be in tip-toe shape and avoid being overweight. Fifth, if you are a smoker, then you must quit ASAP.

The mentioned steps are easy to follow and will minimize the development and recurrence of a hernia. In addition, you will be living a healthy lifestyle, which is always a plus.

As you can see, there are many hernia symptoms to be aware of. Fortunately, treating and preventing them are pretty straight forward and easy to do so long as the condition doesn’t run in your family.
