Bone Loss

Bone Loss And Degeneration

It is general knowledge that both men and women suffer from bone loss during and after the age of 50 years old. This is especially true for individuals who did not develop peak bone mass when they were younger. There are 2 levels of bone loss that you should know about when reading on the subject of bone degeneration and bone loss.

Osteopenia

Osteopenia is the first stage before you advance into osteoporosis. It is also known as BMD (bone mineral density). It is a signal that tells you that your bones are beginning to become thinner or less dense. It happens when your bones break down faster than your body can replace it.

You can avoid osteopenia from advancing into osteoporosis by exercising, consuming enough calcium (not too much or too little). Sometimes, you even have to go see your doctor for some medications.

Osteoporosis

After osteopenia, osteoporosis happens. Note that this transition process can take years to happen. When you have osteoporosis, your bones start to become weaker and more fragile, prone to fracture at anytime. What happens when you don’t treat it? Well, your height will be severely reduced, your posture will be greatly affected and you may suffer from broken bones.

But don’t worry too much. Not everyone will end up with this dreaded osteoporosis. You can run tests that determine the density of your bones. The key is to prevent bone loss and degeneration at the first place. It destroys the possibility of osteoporosis at the first place. It can be done with the proper calcium intake, exercise (weight lifting) and a healthy lifestyle. Women must work harder because they are much more prone to getting the disease than men.

Everybody suffers from bone disease when they are old. This is why elderly people must rest their backs on the zero gravity chair or anti gravity chair.
